Lou Mitchell's Restaurant, Chicago
The National Park Service identifies Lou Mitchell's as a National Register-listed operating restaurant and notes surviving wood and Formica wall paneling dating to 1949. Verify current hours, queues, menu, accessibility, photography, and group policies directly. Visit as a respectful customer rather than staging a production during service.
Belvidere Cafe, Motel, and Gas Station, Illinois
NPS documents the former cafe's streamlined Art Deco interior, including black lacquer counters, chrome trim, stools, and cabinets. Its current NPS page states the property is closed to the public. Observe only from lawful public locations and do not enter. Include it as an exterior research stop only if current road access is safe.
Historic restaurant records along Route 66
The NPS Route 66 National Register list includes restaurants and cafes across the corridor. Some remain businesses; others are private, adapted, or closed. Use each official place page and property source to verify current status. A historic name in a database does not establish interior survival.
Add operating regional diners
Search state National Register records, local surveys, diner manufacturer histories, and preservation organizations, then contact the business. Ask what interior elements remain and whether ordinary dining access is appropriate. Do not advertise a private tour unless the owner offers one.
Publish with access labels
Mark every listing as operating restaurant, public museum, scheduled tour, exterior view only, or not currently open. Date the verification and remove a stop when access becomes uncertain.
